Flames prospect Sven Baertschi backs WHL's Winterhawks

CALGARY - Yeah, Sven Baertschi’s parents once accepted a free flight across the Atlantic Ocean to watch their son skate in the Western Hockey League.

Thing is, the Portland Winterhawks had nothing to do with it.

Baertschi, widely considered the Calgary Flames’ most exciting prospect in recent memory, paid the bill himself.

“My parents only came over once and I paid fully for that. I was able to pay for it because I was already signed with the Flames,” said Baertschi, whose family lives in Switzerland. “In Portland, I got treated the exact same way as anybody else on the team.”

Morgan Rielly, other Maple Leafs prospects eye world juniors

TORONTO - Sure, there are the AHL's Toronto Marlies, the viable development arm of the Maple Leafs that could and probably should get more love than it does from Toronto sports fans.

There is major junior hockey where on any given night if you plan it properly, you can catch a Leafs prospect in action. Then again, we know how the city is resistant to embrace that level of the sport as well.

Thanks to the insanity of the NHL lockout, Leafs fans have gone more wanting than usual in recent months, but with the holidays just around the corner, perhaps the world junior hockey championship from Russia might fill some of the void.

NHL notes: Evgeni Malkin happy in Russia

The NHL lockout apparently hasn't been too tough on Pittsburgh Penguins star Evgeny Malkin.

Malkin has been playing with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL during the NHL work stoppage. And he's been playing well, recording 11 goals and 22 assists in 24 games.

Things are going so well, he doesn't miss the NHL, according to Russia Today (through Sovetsky Sports).

"I'm happy with everything in Magnitogorsk," he said. "We have a great team. We win a lot. I'm in good shape and get plenty of time on the ice.

"It's nicer here as I can communicate in Russian with everybody"¦ it's only calmer in America. I live outside Pittsburgh and I can go for a walk without creating any hype or visit a cafe."

That said, Malkin also added that he won't stick around Mother Russia when the lockout does end.

NEW PERSPECTIVE

Thanks to the NHL lockout, St. Louis Blues forward Jamie Langenbrunner knows what retirement feels like.

The 37-year-old, who signed a one-year, $1.25 million contract with the Blues in the off-season, has more than 1,100 NHL games under his belt. He's in the twilight of his career -- the contract could be his last -- and now has a better understanding of what life will be like when the cheering ends.

"I think this time also prepares you for it," Langenbrunner told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I've gotten involved in coaching the kids' teams and, quite frankly, I've gotten to enjoy that aspect of it.

"You realize there is going to be an end to this (lockout) at some point. But it makes me feel when the end (of his career) does come, I'll be prepared for that."

This isn't the first lockout Langenbrunner has gone through but it most certainly will be his last.

"Speaking for myself, it could be the last year and it's not a lot of fun sitting out like this," he said. "On the other hand, I don't think there's any wavering in the way I feel about it. It wasn't our choice to be locked out."

BRIEFLY

Long-time Los Angeles Kings PA announcer David Courtney died Thursday at age 56. He held the job with the Kings since 1989 and also served as the voice of the Anaheim Angels and Los Angeles Clippers ... Minnesota Wild defenceman Clayton Stoner has signed with Slovakian team HC Banska Bystrica, according to the club's website. Stoner joins San Jose forward Michal Handzus with Bystrica.

Paulina Gretzky decorates Christmas tree in sexy dress

NHL great Wayne Gretzky's model daughter Paulina got a head start on the holidays when she posed with her Christmas tree in a revealing dress.

She wore the sexy black dress, a full-length with high leg slits, while posing in front of the tree that was lit and fully decorated.

"Yes, I know I got my tree a little early," she wrote to describe the image on her Instagram profile.

She also took to Twitter, writing to her followers that "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas (heart) Sweet Dreams Everyone xo."

Paulina has regularly posted sexy images online over the past year, most recently a gallery of revealing Halloween costumes in October. She also was criticized for adding an image of her giving the middle finger to a puppet of U.S. President Barack Obama, which she later took down.

Steelheads set to add Thomas Welsh

A few months back, the Mississauga Steelheads made a deal with the Sarnia Sting that barely registered on the OHL's trade-ometer.

On June 1, the Steelheads sent a fifth-round pick to the Sting for the rights to 1995-born defenceman Thomas Welsh, who had committed to play at Penn State, in a transaction that many believe completed the J.P. Anderson blockbuster made at the 2012 deadline. It was one of four minor deals -- Keegan Wilson to Ottawa for Nicholas Foglia was the biggest -- made that day, the unofficial start of summer in the OHL.

Texas city becoming hockey prospect factory

PLANO, TEX. - This affluent community of 260,000 people, often picked as one of the best places to live in America, is also one of the most popular homes to corporate America.

Driving along its flat and featureless terrain ("Plano" is Spanish for flat) among its twisting overpasses, you'll see the corporate headquarters of companies like Dell and Hewlett-Packard, Dr. Pepper-Snapple and Pizza Hut, CA Technologies and Ericsson. The city is thus responsible for producing a wide variety of some of the most popular consumer products in America.

Laptops.

Smart phones.

Pizza.

You can apparently add another product to the list: blue chip hockey prospects.

This suburb in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex could very well be home to the top pick in the 2013 NHL draft, giving Plano two first-round picks in the last three years.

That's potentially two more than, say, Montreal has produced in that time.

Canada could be loaded at Spengler Cup

Locked out NHL players could get a chance to suit up for Team Canada this Christmas.

While there's time before the six-team Spengler Cup is held in Davos, Switzerland, from Dec. 26-31, for the NHL to get a collective bargaining agreement in place, Hockey Canada may considering using locked out players in the annual tournament.

Ottawa Senators centre Jason Spezza, who is playing with Rapperswil-Jona in the Swiss Elite League, has already volunteered to suit up for Canada. Usually, the roster is made up of Canadian players in Switzerland.

If Hockey Canada does decide to invite Spezza, they will also consider Tyler Seguin (Boston), Logan Couture (San Jose), John Tavares (Islanders), Patrice Bergeron (Boston), Brooks Laich (Washington) and Michael Del Zotto (Rangers).

Senators' Daniel Alfredsson weighs potential lockout options

OTTAWA - When a lockout wiped out the 2004-05 NHL season, a 32-year-old Daniel Alfredsson went back to Europe with the purpose of playing competitive, winning hockey.

He signed with the Frolunda Indians in the Swedish Elite League, the team in his hometown of Gothenburg and one with which he played three seasons prior to joining the Senators in 1995.

Alfredsson played 15 regular-season games with Frolunda, scoring eight goals and nine assists. In the playoffs, he had a team-high 18 points in 14 games and led the Indians to the title they was unable to win when he was playing for them in his early 20s.

“That’s a year I’ll always remember,” Alfredsson said Wednesday at Carleton University after his third practice in a row with the Ravens. “I was fortunate to be on a great team, and I played some of my best hockey I’ve ever played.”

Senators' Jared Cowen tries to keep spirits up

“It doesn’t even hurt,” said Cowen. “I wish there was a little bit of pain, to keep me from doing stuff. I can walk, but I’m supposed to keep right off of it, so (the stitches) stay tight.

“It’s way better than when I did my knee, though. It’s totally different. My knee was swollen. I had it in a straight brace for awhile. Now, it’s not even been two weeks and I can ride the bike and everything.”

That would be easy pedalling on a stationary device, for range of motion purposes — not going at it like someone training for the Tour de France.

“(In) the consultation, (the surgeon) said it’s important to not do too much now,” explained Cowen. “You’ll feel like you’re doing well now, progressing, but when you go to do more, in terms of running, or walking ... doing too much now would be inhibiting later. It’s kind of hard to pull back on the reins and take it easy, but he said later ‘you should be fine.’ ”

It might be tempting to call Cowen injury prone if he wasn’t one of just three Senators to play in all 82 games as an impressive rookie last season. More accurately, the rugged 6-foot-5, 230-pounder was simply hit with a second dose of really bad luck when he encountered hip troubles early last month in Binghamton while with the AHL Senators.

“The first time I hurt it, it wasn’t that bad,” he said. “I was coming back ... I skated twice or three times, and it felt like I was progressing. I kind of hurt it a second time ... which actually tore it, they told me. That time I kind of figured there was something wrong, because my leg went numb a little bit, and it wasn’t getting better, like before. I didn’t know how bad it was until they told me I was getting an MRI. Then I was like, it’s bad.

“I only got to play three games (for the B-Sens), which was brutal. If there’s a time to do it, I guess it’s now, if the (NHL) season doesn’t go on. But there’s no good time at all, really.

“It’s already my second injury like this, so it kind of sucks.”

Cowen will mostly spend downtime at his rented home in Kanata, where he at least has the company of Wacey Hamilton, a B-Sens forward who is out of action with a concussion.

“It’s nice to have someone around, or I’d be going crazy,” said Cowen. “We don’t do much, because he has a concussion and can’t do a lot, and I’m not supposed to do a lot anyway. We’re couch potatoes.”

Better to sit and watch TV now than get up and do something that further delays his return to game action.

“I’m not sure what kind of issues I’d have with the hip,” said Cowen. “With my knee, I had tendinitis in the front, which is normal, but I’m not really familiar with the hip. It’s kind of hard to imagine how it would feel bad, since it feels pretty good right now. (But) it’s hard to say where I’ll be six months from now.

“It’s a long ways away, so I’ve got time on my side. That’s the one good thing about it. And I have all summer. Lots of time to skate and feel good about it.”

Jared Cowen file January, 2009: As a 17-year-old defenceman with Spokane, suffers season-ending knee injury in a game against Chilliwack. He ends up requiring reconstructive surgery.June, 2009: Drafted by the Senators ninth overall.April, 2010: Makes his NHL debut, versus Tampa Bay, in a one-game callup.November, 2011: Scores his first NHL goal, versus Boston.April, 2012: Completes first NHL season as one of only three Senators to play all 82 games. Senators opt to keep Mika Zibanejad in AHL

OTTAWA - The Senators have decided to keep highly-regarded prospect Mika Zibanejad with their farm team in Binghamton rather than allow him to participate in the world junior championship next month in Russia.

Zibanejad scored the winning goal to give Sweden the gold medal at the last WJC.

“We feel like keeping Mika here to play in North America is the best decision for his development," Senators GM Bryan Murray said in a statement Thursday afternoon. "As a young player and person, he’s learning how to play the North American style and continues to progress playing for (coach) Luke (Richardson) in Binghamton.

“Our opinion is that the best way to continue his progress towards becoming an impact player with the Senators is to spend the full season here.”

Wild goalie Josh Harding diagnosed with multiple sclerosis

Minnesota Wild goalie Josh Harding has been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a secret he kept for over a month.

"I didn't know anything about MS. I wish I did. Everybody hears about it, but nobody knows much about it unless you're affected by it," the 28-year-old told Michael Russo of the Minnesota Star Tribune.

Multiple sclerosis is an incurable autoimmune disease. It causes the body to attack the protective lining of nerve cells, affecting how the brain and spinal cord communicate. It leaves the body open to almost any neurological symptom, including difficulty moving, difficulty with balance, problems with speech and vision problems.

Harding was diagnosed in October but kept it private save for his immediate family. Wednesday, he began telling friends and teammates. He also called Wild head coach Mike Yeo and general manager Chuck Fletcher.

"I wanted to be the one to tell them," Harding said. "And this will tell you what type of people these guys are. I didn't know what to expect, how they'd react, if they'd be like, 'What am I going to do? We're going to have to get another goalie.' But not once did either talk about hockey. They were worried about my health."

Harding has been put on an aggressive treatment of medication to battle the disease. The Regina, Sask., native intends to continue his career.

"Josh's competitive fire has led him to a successful career in the NHL and we know he will approach this new battle in the same manner," Fletcher said.

"I don't look at this like I've got to take a new path," said Harding. "This is a little bump in the road. I've had lots in life."

Harding was drafted 38th overall by the Wild in 2002. He signed a three-year, $5.7-million contract over the summer after putting up a respectable 13-12 record with a 2.62 goals-against average and .917 save percentage last season.

American hockey supremacy just a matter of time

BUFFALO - Damn Yankees.

Two American leaders are butting heads in the NHL labour impasse, depriving us of our Canadian Saturday night tradition.

The Stanley Cup, which hasn't called a Canadian city home since 1993, is now is residence in the 90210 area code after the Los Angeles Kings brought the NHL's chalice to Southern California for the second time in five years.

An American-born captain, Dustin Brown, hoisted the Cup last spring. It was going to be an American no matter who won the final, with Minnesota's Zach Parise of the New Jersey Devils on the other side.

After winning five world junior championships in a row, Canada had it streak snapped in 2010 by the Americans and hasn't won since.

The year before Canada started its drive for five, the U.S. also won the world junior title in 2004. The U.S. and Canada are the only multiple gold-medal winners since then.

Winnipeg Jets told to shut up in NHL lockout talks

WINNIPEG - It has long been suggested the Winnipeg Jets owners have no say in the current labour negotiations, and a report out of Boston confirms that line of thinking.

Bruins insider Joe Haggerty of Comcast Sportsnet New England reports a Jets alternate governor, not principal owner Mark Chipman, was admonished recently by Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs at a Board of Governors meeting, for suggesting the NHL's newest franchise is not in favour of a prolonged lockout.

Haggerty says the Jets alternate governor, whom he did not identify, said the franchise "was opposed to engaging in a long, bloody lockout sure to stymie their franchise's momentum and hurt the game of hockey."

At that point Jacobs, considered one of the owners' driving forces behind the lockout, "answered by reprimanding the Winnipeg representative as one of the 'new kids on the block' and informed him that he would know when he was allowed to speak in the NHL boardroom."

Mark Chipman and David Thomson of True North Sports and Entertainment paid $170 million in 2011 to purchase the Atlanta Thrashers and move them to Winnipeg. About $60 million of that money was a franchise relocation fee which was divvied up amongst the other owners.

The Jets were extremely successful in their return to Winnipeg, selling out every game and becoming a top seller in terms of merchandise.

When Forbes released its NHL franchise values report Wednesday, it pegged the Jets at about $200 million, which is $90 million more than what it was worth in Atlanta.

Despite that, Jets ownership has been forced to go along with the rest of the league in a lockout that is hurting their momentum and putting a sour taste back into the mouths of fans who went 15 years without a team before the Jets finally returned last season.

Red Wings prospect busted in Teletubby costume

Detroit Red Wings prospect Riley Sheahan wasn’t just “super drunk,” as Grand Rapids police allege, when he was pulled over and arrested for drunk driving last month.

No, the former first-round NHL draft pick was also, uh, dressed as a purple Teletubby. Yes, a purple Teletubby. Allegedly, of course.

And, the 20-year-old from St. Catharines, Ont., also allegedly tried to use an older teammate’s identification.

MLive.com discovered details of Sheahan’s Oct. 29 drunk-driving arrest by requesting the police report under the Freedom of Information Act. It alleged that Sheahan had a blood-alcohol level of .30, nearly four times the legal limit and well over the “super drunk” definition of .17 under Michigan law, in addition to the other details.

Cops first through they were dealing with Grand Rapids defenceman Brendan Smith, who at 23 years of age is old enough to drink in the state. Smith was the Red Wings’ first-round draft pick in 2007.

“Riley had a Michigan driver’s license in the license window in his wallet, which is what Officer Dyer used as his ID,” the police report said, according to MLive.com. “Deputies found Riley’s Canadian license in the wallet after it was turned in with his property and he kept telling them his name was Riley.

“Riley is only 20 and I asked him if he had Branden’s (sic) ID so he could get in the bars. He shook his head yes and stated ‘yea.’“

Sheahan, who was arraigned in Grand Rapids District Court on Nov. 6, has his next hearing on Dec. 13. If convicted under Michigan’s “new super-drunk” law, he could get 180 days in jail and be deported.

Maple Leafs worth $1 billion, extend reign as NHL's most valuable -- Forbes

The Toronto Maple Leafs are the first hockey team to be worth $1 billion, more than triple the average value of National Hockey League franchises, according to an annual survey released by Forbes on Wednesday.

The Maple Leafs, who were acquired by Rogers Communications and telecom provider BCE a year ago, topped the list for the seventh consecutive year despite their failure to make the NHL playoffs since 2004.

The NHL’s 30 teams are worth an average $282 million, a 17.5% rise over last year, due largely to what Forbes said was the league’s ability to raise ticket prices, increase attendance and renew or secure lucrative sponsorships.

But the spread between rich and poor teams proved dramatic as the NHL’s top five teams are worth an average $605 million versus the $145 million average value of the bottom five teams.

The New York Rangers ($750 million) and Montreal Canadiens ($575 million) were the second and third top valued teams on the list and together with the Maple Leafs accounted for 83% of the NHL’s income.

The Chicago Blackhawks ($350 million) and Boston Bruins ($348 million), Stanley Cup champions in 2010 and 2011 respectively, rounded out the top five while the reigning Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles Kings were ranked 10th with a value of $276 million.

The Forbes report was released with the NHL in the midst of a bitter labour dispute with players that began mid September.

The dispute has already wiped out a third of the regular season with the two sides still at odds over how to split up revenues.

Forbes top NHL 10 teams:

1. Toronto Maple Leafs ($1 billion)

2. New York Rangers ($750 million)

3. Montreal Canadiens ($575 million)

4. Chicago Blackhawks ($350 million)

5. Boston Bruins ($348 million)

6. Detroit Red Wings ($346 million)

7. Vancouver Canucks ($342 million)

8. Philadelphia Flyers ($336 million)

9. Pittsburgh Penguins ($288 million)

10. Los Angeles Kings ($276 million)

Glendale City Council accepts Coyotes arena deal

Greg Jamison overcame a major hurdle in his quest to own the Phoenix Coyotes.

Glendale City Council agreed to a new arena deal Tuesday that paves the way for the former San Jose Sharks CEO to purchase the beleaguered team and keep it in Arizona.

Council voted 4-2 in favour of a 20-year deal that will see the city pay $320-million in a lease agreement for Jobing.com Arena, the Coyotes' home rink.

The NHL has been trying to sell the Coyotes for three years after buying the club for $140-million in 2009 when the previous owner went into Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

AHL Day 5 - Tassie Tigers v SA Hotshots

The stars are starting to align for the Tassie Tigers as they remain disciplined, follow the team plan and are coalescing as a team, which saw them rewarded with a convincing 5-1 win over the South Australian Hotshots.

While the Tigers' progression during the AHL tournament is consistent with coach Glenn Freeman's mantra of continuous improvement, it is pleasing to see the team's self-belief growing and their confidence returning after some disappointing results.

Today's match started poorly for the Tigers as the Hotshots converted their first PC of the match. This was the only time that they appeared to provide any threat to the Tigers, who subsequently switched to game mode and shut the Hotshots out of the game. The Tigers' strong defence and midfield continued to frustrate the opposition's forwards, while the Tigers' forwards played with a new sense of purpose.

Once again, Luke Doerner converted an early PC to put the Tigers on the scoreboard. This was followed by a wonderfully set up goal to Angus Boulton in the 17th minute that saw the ball move from one side of the field to the other before a pin point pass found Boulton free on the spot, with plenty of time to convert.

An overlap by Nick Budgeon late in the first half saw his clever backstick flick beat the keeper but not the legs of the defender on the goal line. Budgeon duly converted the penalty stroke to give the Tigers a 3-1 lead with 6 minutes remaining in the half. A crude tackle on Sam McCambridge a minute later saw the Tigers earn a second penalty stroke, which was put away by Luke Doerner.

At half time Glenn Freeman asked his team to ignore the scoreboard, not to get complacent and to keep improving in the second half. The Tigers responded but were met by a determined Hotshots team. While a number of chances were missed by the Tigers, they denied their opponents any clear opportunities to score, as shown by the Hotshots only getting their second PC in the final minutes of the match.

The only goal of the term occurred in the 55th minute when Geoff Cock pounced on the rebound of a PC shot. The score could have been better than the 5-1 end result when the Tigers received a third penalty stroke (this time for the keeper taking out Angus Boulton) but Nick Budgeon's shot was saved.

The Tigers are full of confidence and will use the next 48 hours wisely to prepare for their next match against the NT Stingers on Tuesday and their final pool match against the Victorian Vikings on Wednesday. It is likely that the match against the Vikings may determine which of the two teams progresses to the medal round.

AHL Game 7 - Tassie Tigers v Victorian Vikings

The Tassie Tigers took it right up to the Victorian Vikings in their final pool match of the AHL today and were unlucky to come away with a 2-2 draw as they dominated the match during key periods but were unable to find the back of the net for the elusive game winner.

The Tigers weathered sustained attack by the Vikings in the opening minutes of the match and gradually turned the tide. Another PC goal from the ever-reliable Luke Doerner in the 13th minute was the only score for the half, with the Tigers leading 1-0 at the break.

The Tigers' determination rattled the Vikings and their frustration was not appreciated by the umpires who gave them 2 yellow cards in the second half. Unfortunately the Tigers failed to capitalise on these power plays by running the ball into the Victorians rather than using their numbers and passing around them.

The Tigers also draw the wrath of the umpires for tackles that got more of the opponents stick than the ball, earning a green card in each half. The Vikings capitalised on the second green card by forcing and then converting a PC while the Tigers were reduced to 10 men.

An slightly misdirected push out on a Tigers' PC saw Ed Ockenden trap the ball and strike at goal but his shot was just above the backboard and the goal was disallowed. The Vikings made no mistake of their next PC, taking the lead for the first time in the 57th minute.

The Tigers frantically pushed up the field to score the 2 goals required to put them into the medal round and were caught out when a breakaway saw a Vikings' striker receive the ball at the halfway line with a clear run to goal. Goalkeeper Aaron Guilliamse came out of the net and prevented a direct shot and then David Guest deflected the subsequent shot onto the crossbar.

In the final minutes of the match the Tigers replaced Guilliamse with a field player in order to score the elusive goals. They managed to equalise in the final minute with a neat piece of control by the mercurial Ockenden but it was a case of too little too late.

The final score of 2-2 meant that the Tigers were unable to displace the Vikings from 4th place. Their next match is the classification match with the 8th ranked team (the NT Stingers) on Friday at 10:00.

While disappointed that they could not move into the vital 4th place, the Tigers should take solace from the results they achieved - 3 wins and 2 draws.

AHL Game 9 - Tassie Tigers v Southern Hotshots

The Tassie Tigers brought their A game to today's AHL classification match, relegating the South Australian Hotshots to the wooden spoon with a clinical display. Solid performances by all Tigers saw them dominate the match and win 4-1.

After yesterday's disappointment, the Tassie Tigers regrouped for their final match of the 2012 AHL campaign. From the start the Tigers played with the focus apparent in the pool matches but which had deserted them for yesterday's match against the NT Stingers.

The Tigers controlled the play but were unable to score despite putting the Hotshots' defence under relentless pressure. Eventually the Tigers wore down the Hotshots, with Adam Clifford scoring his first goal of the tournament with a clinical finish half way through the first term, after good build up from the Tigers' midfield.

Once again, Luke Doerner demonstrated why he is the leading goal scorer of the tournament, when he converted a PC with a powerful drag flick that had the defenders ducking for cover. This goal in the final minute of the half, saw Tasmania leading 2-0 at the break.

It was expected that the Hotshots would throw everything at the Tigers in the second half as they had nothing to lose. The Tigers' structure control and poise negated the Hotshots effectively.

The second half of the match mirrored the first with a PC goal half way through (this time to Nick Budgeon) and a goal in the final minute (to captain Eddie Ockenden). The final goal was a delight, with Budgeon sending a long overhead pass from deep defence to Ockenden, who eliminated the Hotshots' keeper at the top of the circle and sent the ball into the empty goal with mere seconds remaining.

To the Hotshots credit, they earned and converted a PC in the final minutes of the match. This was the only PC they forced during the match, which was testament to the solid Tigers' defence.

The final score of 4-1 was a good reflection of the difference between the two teams.

Van Demons Game 5 Blog vs Victoria

After getting our first points of the tournament against Northern Territory yesterday there was a good vibe going into our match against Victoria.

The Vics have a solid team with Australian squad players such as Georgia Nanscawen, Kary Chau and Claire Messent alongside Hockeyroos goalkeeper Rachel Lynch in their team but we believed if we played our best hockey we could match them.

The Vics slick ball movement and the hot conditions put us on the back foot early with our defence under a bit of pressure early but we stood strong and weathered the quick moving Victorian midfield and forward line.

Once we got our hands on the ball we found ourselves giving away possession and not being able to play fluent hockey with the Victorians showing us up possession wise.

As the half progressed we managed to penetrate into our attacking 50 earning a couple of penalty corners and goal scoring opportunities however the Victorians urgency and aggressiveness in defence meant our limited attacking opportunities were broken down.

Despite not playing our best hockey we were right in the match but it was the Vics who took the lead after scoring 10 minutes before half time.

After re-grouping at half time, we started the second half well and were very close to levelling the scores in the first 5 minutes.  Despite our good start however it was Victoria who showed us how to put the ball in the back of the net and took a two goal advantage early in the second half.

After the Vics second goal they got a roll on and our poor basics were really letting us down.  The tempo of the game was increased further as a couple of yellow cards left us with 9 players on the park for a 10 minute period.

Victoria capitalised and took advantage of the situation and made the eight field players we had on the pitch cover a lot of ground.  They manoeuvred the ball swiftly from their midfield to their forward line to fluently add numbers to the scoreboard.

The second half was really disappointing and our basics and a couple of poor decisions let us down and cost us dearly with Victoria scoring six second half goals to run away with a 7-0 win.

We now have a rest day tomorrow which we will use to recover after playing in hot temperatures the last few days as well as look at the issues to come out of the Victorian game.

Our final round robin matches are against South Australia and ACT and will again be tough contests.  As we move to the crunch time of the tournament we need to be able to string together some good hockey for the important classification rounds at the end of next week.

Message from Carl…

As some of you know I am climbing Kilimanjaro with three others in February and we have decided to take this opportunity to raise money for charity. The climb is being funded by the climbers so all monies raised will be split equally between 5 local charities, the Wessex Cancer Trust Is my chosen charity.
We have all been training hard over the last few weeks and to help keep the motivation high I would like to ask if you would be willing to make a small donation. With this in mind I have taken the liberty of attaching a link to the Virgin Money Giving site  that we have set up, where you can see all of the information about our trip.
Thanks and kind regards
Carl Tanguy

How To Properly Enjoy The BTSH Finals: A Primer For The Uninitiated

By Bill “What Did I Miss?” Tucker

In the storied history of the Black Top Street Hockey league, one axiom has always held true.  It’s not who wins the championship that matters.  It’s how much fun everyone had along the way.

On the exterior, BTSH may look like just another beer league.  People get together, play hockey, maybe have a pint afterwards and go home.  A fun way to spend a couple hours on a Sunday afternoon.  But for me and so many others, BTSH offers so much more.  The soul of the league isn’t in the games, the standings or even the winners.  It’s the way you can get lit up like a Christmas tree at the hands of Adriano and clink a cocktail with him thirty minutes later.  It’s in how someone on the Anklebiters will always spot you a High Life, especially if you’re “just about to leave”.  It’s in the many friendships, relationships and marriages that have been formed whiling away Sunday evenings in the company of teammates.  The Championship Game is a perfect opportunity for those of you who’ve missed out on this crucial piece of the BTSH experience to get a taste of what this league is all about.  As a result, here’s a primer to help you have an amazing time on November 4th.

Play Your Game

Before arriving to the court, you should show up to your exhibition game.  After all, not only is this the last hockey hurrah of the season, it’s the perfect opportunity to engage in outrageous shenanigans.  These games are all unsupervised, so feel free to let the goalies take face-offs, brown bag whilst playing defense and dress in a variety of ridiculous costumes.  If the common bystander isn’t gawking in either amusement or disgust, you’re doing something wrong.

Stretch Out…Your Liver

While I refuse to condone excessive drinking on this family oriented website (wink wink, nudge nudge), there’s nothing wrong with a social few before sitting down to watch the championship game.  Many a den of iniquity resides in the neighborhood of Tompkins Square Park, so feel free to grab some teammates and have one last hockey based hurrah before the season concludes.   And if you see me face down in a fish tank somewhere on Avenue B, rouse me from my stupor so I can experience….

The Heckle Wall

Despite sanctions from the league office, some teams have been known to throw their playoff games just so they can be a part of this BTSH institution.  For those unaware, the Heckle Wall allows you to hurl insults at the best the league has to offer as they toil for the championship.  The more lubricated the Wall Wailers tend to be, the more creative they become so join in on the random fun.  Besides, nothing says league comradery like screaming, “Scott Lee is a 12 year old girl” and making fun of ***that guy on LBS’s*** signature headband.

The Game Itself

Despite the shenanigans, street hockey fans are going to be treated to one doozey of a final. On one side stands Fresh Kills, winners of last year’s tournament looking to add a repeat to their impressive team resume.  One the other side sits LBS, giant killers who had to defeat the third ranked Poutine Machine and the top seeded Hookers to reach hockey nirvana.  Both battle tested and ready.  Both thirsty for one last W.  The stage is set for an epic contest.

The After Party

When the champs are crowned, the fun doesn’t stop there.  The league’s end of season party generally takes place at Parkside Lounge, a seedy dive that has all the gritty charm BTSH regulars crave.  Featuring pool, a photo booth and a back area where the ORG will hand out its yearly awards, the evening is good fun for everybody involved.   It’s also an excellent opportunity to have embarrassing photographs taken of you for this very website.  Just be sure to take Monday off from work or at least come up with a decent excuse for the inevitable call out sick.

Follow this blueprint for Sunday success and you’ll be well on your way to catching the BTSH bug.  And remember, we all boil down to grown adults chasing an orange ball around a basketball court.  The blast we have after the games is what makes the whole thing special.

The PSHL is back in full force!  Last week we had a great 5 on 5 game with 2 goalies (thanks Stephanie and Weston!) and two subs.  The white team started with an early flurry of goals before the dark team settled into their game and made things close.  Grethe won the game for the white team with a quick redirection on a centering pass from Tim.

Be there tonight for another fine night of hockey in the desert at 7pm.
We should see an international crowd with players from Canada, Hungary and even Slovakia once again!

Keep your stick on the ice,
Tim

Game ON this coming Saturday.  Be there around 7pm for a fine night of Tucson Street Hockey.
Read last weeks recap of our extremely satisfying total team victory over Anthem, AZ (written by Daniel):

On Saturday, March 28, our rink at Santa Catalina High School witnessed the dreaded/anticipated/eagerly-awaited encounter between the Anthem and the PSHL teams. Before any PSHL player had shown up, eight Anthem guys were already practicing in the rink. But the PSHL was eager to play too, and well over a dozen people eventually joined in. Stephanie in the goal, plenty of subs for our side, and the game started (almost) on time. (Odd enough to be pointed out.)

Right after the start the ball was in the PSHL side, the Anthem guys playing fast and pressuring us. Then the game became more balanced. Anthem had a few opportunities, but Stephanie played great. The score stayed at 0:0 for a long time (15-20 minutes). Then it happened that the PSHL players were Hinako, Janis, Naghmeh, Stephanie, Mike, and Tim. I remember Bob mentioning that we were in for a tough time… but Tim scored! 1:0 for PSHL. A moment later (well, 20 minutes of moments later) it was 3:0 for us and we stopped for a break.

The game kept being pleasant in the second period, PSHL in overall control, but Anthem had good opportunities too, notably a few breakaways where a fast Anthem guy was alone in facing Stephanie. But she stopped all but one. I think it was 5:1 when the second period ended.

In the third period Anthem played courageously, although they were visibly tired. PSHL was not, thanks to so many subs and we continued to wear them down! We gave them a hard time, although they managed to score a second goal. It was 10:2 (some say 13:2) when the game ended.

The game was extremely fair, and the Anthem guys should be commanded for that. They drove to Tucson, they agreed to play our rules (they do not have balls in Anthem!), they had to cope with our treacherous rink, they certainly hoped to give us a hard time. Yet they were very graceful after the game. It was most pleasant to share a couple beers with them afterward.

l1020216.jpg l1020217.jpg l1020218.jpg

We owe them a rematch in their home rink, using a puck, on Saturday, April 18th at 6pm!  Who’s willing to make the trip? So far was have:
- Tim
- Daniel
- Naghmeh
- The Tominator

You?

Let me know if you can make it.  I’ll send more information and directions next week.

Keep your stick on the ice,
Tim

We’ve been challenged.

A group of street hockey players like us from Anthem, AZ (near Phoenix) are planning to make the Southern trip this Saturday evening to be schooled on the game of hockey.  They are bringing a goalie and a full team so we may have our hands full, but I expect a good game and a great time.

You won’t wanna miss this, bring your A game.  I’m going to get there around 6:45 or so and expect to start playing shortly after 7.

Anthem/Phoenix players. Please bring DARK shirts/jerseys. You will be the evil…. errr… i mean dark team.PSHL’ers. Please bring WHITE shirts/jerseys. We will be the white team.

Keep your stick on the ice,
Tim

Its been awhile since I’ve sent a PSHL email, but 2010 looks to be a good year for hockey in Arizona (heck, the Coyotes might even make the playoffs!) and I’m looking forward to many fun nights of street and roller hockey out at Eric Michael Ogden Skate Park.

We launched an updated website late last year and you can now create your own profile like this:  http://pimastreethockey.com/players/tim/ (just click the Register link in the box on the top right area of the screen).  This site has helped bring in new players and is ranked #1 in Google for “Tucson Hockey” and even “Street Hockey League” (it’s even #2 if you just type in “Street Hockey”!).  We’ve also got an integrated Facebook page which you should join if you haven’t already >> http://www.facebook.com/pages/Pima-Street-Hockey-League/207865235872

Erick has taken over care of the equipment and nets, even purchasing a new set of goalie pads along with a brand new goalie stick.  Pitch in some $ to him if you can to help with these costs.  He’s also going to be repainting the center line and goalie creases over the next few weeks.  At the very least everyone should bring him a Guinness for his efforts!

The Anthem hockey team (from North of Phoenix) is going to be paying us a visit in February.  The dates are not set yet but it’s looking like either the 13th or 20th for this big game to take place.  We crushed them during the last home game but then lost a devastatingly close game on their beautiful court.  I’ll send another email out when the details are set.

In other news we’re talking about starting to play on Wednesdays again and hope to get enough interest over the next few weeks to get that going.  I’m also finally getting some PSHL jerseys printed and should have those ready by mid-February.  If all goes well PSHL shirts (light and dark of course) will follow.

And don’t forget, Game On tonight at 7pm!

Keep your stick on the ice,
- Tim

Hockey 4 nights a week would be amazing! (Monday roller hockey, Wednesday/Saturday street hockey, and Tuesday night Bladeworld league) I’m just so happy that even in the middle of the desert we can muster up enough interest in hockey to play some descent games. I look forward to improving dramatically in goal with all of this practice. I’m also going to be strength and endurance training at Gold’s on Speedway a couple times a week. See you all out on the rink!

Written by Swiss Dan

For our first away game ever, we went to Anthem, North of Phoenix, in order to play the local team in their beautiful rink. The rink is large, they play with a very bouncy puck, and their goals are larger. We saw the return of the Tominator in our goal. The rest of the team consisted of Bob, Chris, Daniel, Duke (all the way from Vegas!), Erick, Erin, Gordie (for the 1st period), Marcus, and Tim.

The game started quickly, and Chris started off the scoring with a high shot into the corner of the net which was quickly followed by a low by Tim (setup by Gordie’s behind-the-net hustle) 2:0 for us! But then we experienced many problems. The size of the rink, and the difficulty of many of us to control the puck caused us to score two goals on our own net as we were getting the hang of things. Tom did a great job and he made many saves, but Anthem came back and even took the lead, 2:3. Then we scored one, and we stopped for the first (well deserved!) break.

I think many of us played a bit better in the second period. Erin played tough in defense, Marcus caught many pucks, Bob was a rock that was hard to go around. Chris played great on offense and Tim had impressive raids around several Anthem players (though had trouble keeping control of the bobbling puck long enough to get off solid shots). On the other hand, we were getting tired with many less subs than Anthem. The game was always pleasant, despite occasional tough play. Clearly, both teams wanted to win! The score stayed close throughout, never more than 2 goals apart. At the end of the period, we were trailing 7:8 and had lost Duke to a sprained ankle injury.

It was then agreed that the first team to reach 10 will be the winner. The last period saw much offense, with many 3 on 2 in either direction, as the offense players were too tired to get back quickly. Both goalies did a great job and it was hard to score. We did score two, going ahead 9:8. Both teams had many occasions, hitting the post or the crossbar, Anthem scoring one. 9:9, the game is damn close! We had our chances of scoring the last goal, but we missed, and Anthem eventually won, 9:10!!!

I think we all played great. Special mention to Tim (amazing to watch, 6 goals), to Chris (3 goals), and last but not least, to the Tominator for a very solid game. Thanks to Anthem for their invitation to play against them, and for the beer and pizza. We had a nice time in the pub next door afterwards.

We look forward to continuing this rivalry and plan on monthly games where we take turn making the commute.  Next game, May? in Tucson!

Last week we had a full court game with goalies and field players and several subs for each team, that was great! The game was also very competitive, with impressive duels between Tim and Brian.

As far as I remember, the white team started very strong, building a lead of 5:1 or so very quickly, but the dark team managed to come back a bit. 7:3 at the period, or so. In the second period, and thanks to a great Stephanie in the dark goals, the white did not manage to score for a while, so the game got tied 8:8. Then it was even for a while, until 12:12 or so. At this time Stephanie again played unbelievably well and the dark team won 16:12 (I think). Eric in the other goal played great too, both goalies had many saves to do in order to keep the score reasonable.

I wonder whether we just had Game 1 in one of the great goalie rivalries of PSHL, going back to the glorious Tom and Chris?

Next game Saturday!

- Daniel

As most of you know we played a tough game against the team from Anthem (Phoenix) a few weeks ago and emerged victorious.  After the game we agreed it would be good to return the favor and make the trip up there.  So here we are, this Saturday at 6pm, Game On!  This should be a great game and a nice celebration of Daniel’s birthday (I believe he turns 25?).

Gametime:
6pm to 9pm’ish

Equipment:
They use a roller hockey puck but wear the same protective equipment as us.  I’ll be bringing some larger shin pads just in case but plan on wearing my regular soccer shin pads and gloves.

Directions:
- from I10 Take I17 North (about 20 miles north of Phoenix)
- Exit Anthem Way, make a right turn
- Gavilan Peak Parkway, make a right turn (M&I bank on the corner)
- At the stop sign make a left Turn into the Park.  You will see a roller blade park and the hockey rink on your right hand side.

The rink is about a 2hr drive from Tucson. If you need to google directions, Legends Bar & Grill is right across the street from Anthem Park where the rink is located.

Legends Bar & Grill
3655 W Anthem Way #D115
Anthem, AZ 85086
(623) 551-9525

Transportation & Lodging:
- Who’s planning on driving up there and back to Tucson?  Please post to the website if you can take anybody else:  http://pimastreethockey.com/checkin/
- Erick is getting a room at the Hampton which people may be able to crash at.
- The Anthem guys offered places to stay
- Erin, Chris, Tom & Naghmeh should all be coming from Phoenix and may have a place to crash.

As of now I know we have the following people coming:
- Tim
- Tom “The Tominator” (starting goalie)
- Chris Kase (scoring threat and backup goalie)
- Naghmeh
- Erin
- Erick
- Daniel (who’s also celebrating his birthday on Saturday!)

You too?

Any questions?  Please email me and I’ll try to help.

Just a few more details about the upcoming game in Anthem…

1. They use a blue line – not 100% technical – if a player is within a foot they usually let it go
2. They will wear dark again so PSHL can wear light colours
3. no hitting allowed, but they allow pinning on the boards – the intent is not to hurt anyone as we are all having fun, but you can pin players
4. no icing in effect
5. players can only sub in and out from their own bench :-)

Carl Tanguy

Guernsey Men’s 1st team have drawn Purley Walcountians at home in the next round of the EH Trophy and we have negotiated for the game to be played at home on Saturday 19th November, push back at 7.30pm

The bar will of course be open and chilli, soup and French bread will be available.  The proceeds of which will go to help the 1st team’s costs in getting Purley over to Guernsey as we have to pay for their travel.

Please spread the word to get as many people down to the pitch as possible to cheer on the Mighty Greens, will be a great night with some quality hockey!
